Literally meaning “substitute,” saliling or egg sacrifice is held for minor spirit-caused illnesses of the body. There are various ways by which a dangerous spirit can contact and hence harm the human host. For this type of illness, the spirit contact is often imagined/rationalized as a “striking” (
dagpi) on the body of human host, i.e., especially when that human being had unknowingly made noise, hence disturbing, a place where a predator spirit is said to be residing. To cure this, a medium inspects the afflicted part of the body by sensing its temperature first (i.e., the medium’s palm is glossed over the afflicted part). Then the medium requests a native chicken egg and passes this a little above the skin of the afflicted bodily part. The act is believed to transfer the ill-causing substance to the sacrificial chicken egg. The medium then furthers the healing by sucking the bad element out of the patient’s body and then blows his or her breath on the same afflicted part. After the curing moment, the chicken egg is displayed on a bamboo pole stuck to the ground at the fence or at the border between the yard of the house and outside of it (see inset photo). Liquor is poured over the ground to recognize the spirit of the earth where the house is standing.
